Nigel de Gruchy (TES, April 21) knows that in today’s circumstances bullying by management is a problem. So is bullying by union officers and officials.
He is reluctant to criticise people for failing to be heroes. However, born heroes may not need unions. Doug McAvoy of the National Union of Teachers told the union’s devoted delegates at Blackpool Easter conference that they are living in a fantasy world of unachievable aims, impossible goals and unattainable targets.
When Rob Prior, Les Moores and NUT delegates encounter public criticism from their own unions, heaven save other ordinary teachers like myself.
Back to heroes. I thought our leaders were supposed to be the heroes. Enlightened leaders were supposed to make common people achieve uncommon things.
