As contractors pulled out all the stops last week to make sure that the extension to Mearns Castle High in East Renfrewshire was ready on time for the new term, visitors to the school couldn’t help but notice men wearing T-shirts emblazoned with the initials “EIS” working on the automatic entrance doors.

But union activists need not worry. The initials stand for Eaglesham Infrastructure Services, an electrical sub-contractor. Perhaps it’s the Scottish Secondary Teachers’ Association that should be worried about what its general secretary, David of that ilk, might be up to.
