Tapestry believes its offerings are good for the mind - travelling is supposed to broaden it, after all. Such events are also good for a bit of reminiscing, as we discovered.

Iain Smith, dean of education at Strathclyde University, and Ian Smith, his counterpart at the University of Paisley (can you spot the difference?), recalled how they were once speaking from the same platform.

The chairman, at a loss as to how to distinguish between them, eventually hit upon the obvious. Thus it was that, for the remainder of the proceedings, the speakers were known as “Iain Strathclyde” and “Ian Paisley”.
