What’s new in the Publishing Village

From just 41 exhibitors in 1991 to 104 in 2000, the Publishing Village has grown to be the UK’s largest annual gathering of educational publishers. It’s a good idea to start at the Information Point (PV1), where British Council staff and databases will be on hand to track down books effortlessly.

A amp; C Black stand PV107 Making Books aims to narrow the gap between children’s reading and writing, with ideas for easy to make pop-ups, diaries and poetry folders. For early years and reception class teachers, Exploring Numbers and Shape and Space and Measure are new in the Learning Activities series. Each topic includes a list of learning outcomes, key vocabulary, guidance for assessment and resources.

BBC stand PV52 Following the success of GCSE Bitesize Revision, the BBC is launching key stage 3 Bitesize Revision and ReviseWise for key stage 2 using the same combination of TV, audio, books, CD-Roms and the Internet to prepare for tests. The Words and Pictures Alphabet Rhymes Big Book, for key stage 1, comes with teachers’ notes for shared reading and writing. The Find Out About big books are full of colour photographs and pictures on science topics.

CUP stand PV120 Cambridge Reading’s new sight word strand for four to six-year-olds includes new fiction and non-fiction. Phonics for Reading provides a flipover book, children’s books and teachers’ guides.

Carel Press stand PV352 The Shorter Shakespeare series (Romeo and Juliet, Macbeth and Twelfth Night) links a shortened version of the plays in the original language with a modern chorus. The teachers’ resource book suggests many practical activities for different ability levels.

Collins stands PV221250 Collins is offering free demo disks of Rapid Maths and savings of more than pound;80 on Starter Packs for Years 1 and 2, free demo disks previewing all six plays in the BBC Shakespeare on CD-Rom series and discounts on bilingual and English dictionaries.

Evans Brothers stand PV140 David Orme’s Literacy Line-Up for key stage 2 covers a range of genres and books. Evans will be offering discounts on this series as well as Annie Owen’s Number Resources and The Chain Gang.

Folens stand PV290 The Folens Handwriting Programme links handwriting with spelling. Poetry Works for key stage 2 features 80 illustrated posters, pupil books and teacher guides. Folens will also be launching three new professional development packs for foreign language teachers.

Ginn stand PV130 New publishing includes Literacy Directions for shared reading and Models for Writing for guided and extended writing.

Heinemann stand PV220 The Worlds of Literacy series is expanding to include Storyworlds Bridges for young fluent readers; Literacy World Satellites and Discovery World for lower ability pupils.

Hodder amp; Stoughton stand PV190 Two new strands in the Livewie series for reluctant readers include Myths and Legends and Science Fiction. There are new titles in the Real Lives series, too.

Hopscotch stand PV101 This company, now in its third year, specialises in lesson plans with photocopiable activity sheets at three differentiated levels. ICT Skills is a new series of teachers’ resource books for reception to Year 6, written for non-specialists.

Kingscourt stands PV97PV145 Try interactive phonics with Sounds Great, a set of five CD-Roms for teaching phonemic awareness, letter-sound relationships, word knowledge and grammar. A new programme of high interest lower ability books at key stages 2 and 3 offers Explorers and Woodland Mysteries.

Longman stand PV10 Award-winning author Jeremy Strong has written Story Street, the fiction strand of Longman’s reading programme, Literacy Land. Genre Range and Info Trail offer further variety of text types including plays, poetry, traditional tales, comics, letters, diaries and non-fiction.

John Murray stand PV260 New editions of Tout droit! and Droit au but! are the first books for the new A and AS-level specifications. Science teachers will find new physics and chemistry titles and also look out for Peter Riley’s Physics Now!, winner of The TES science schoolbook award 2000.

Oxfam stand PV148 Photo Opportunities 2000 and Wake Up World (a day in the life of children around the world) are new for primary teachers. Secondary teachers should look out for Dealing with Disasters and four new titles in the Country Profiles series, on Albania, Brazil, Cambodia and Ghana.

OUP stand PV60 Reading Tree enthusiasts will find two new word level work videos. Also look out for the Rhyme and Analogy software (winner of the BETT 2000 primary award) and the new Oxford Reading Tree dictionary and big book. (For a Welsh language version, visit Drake Education Associates, stand PV318.) Oxford’s literacy web is growing too, with new fiction, non fiction and anthologies. Modern linguists can sample the 11-6 courses Klasse! and Espa$ol de Primero, based on the same model as Equipe.

Puffin stand PV2 The relaunch of the Puffin Book Club is the key feature of the Puffin stand. Free starter packs and advice on maximising the benefits of club membership (for example, pound;100 of free books from the Puffin range on orders of pound;100-pound;299) will be available.

Rigby stand PV131 Two new reading programmes: Rigby Red Giant offers resources for shared reading and Rigby Star focuses on guided reading. Also new resources for Magic Bean, Focus English and Sunshine.

RoutledgeFalmer stand PV96 Drama and Traditional Story for the Early Years and Co-ordinating English at Key Stage 1 are among the new titles. Making Multimedia in the Classroom explores developing computer skills with plenty of practical advice and classroom examples.
