I believe that my students are enthused about mathematics but there are far too many instances where the time pressures mean that I can no longer investigate context-based maths as much and therefore provide a sense of purpose in my students. Mathematicians are plodding through uninspiring courses (despite the efforts of teachers).
Under the old regime (which was hard enough for the majority), my students would have sat only two modules and would have, in my opinion, been better off for it. With no change in volume of material to be studied, they must now sit three modules in May. My mathematics is good enough to see that we were bound to see a fall in grades.
I also see little benefit in Estelle Morris’s suggestions for cutting the pressure. How soon she forgot what it is like to be a teacher ...
