When to untie apron strings

I always insist on knowing where both my children are going. My teenage daughter, who travels further afield, knows that I expect a phone call when she has reached her destination. We must give our children freedom to become independent people who know what road safety is, who can use public transport and who are not tied to our apron strings until they leave home.
