An A-level student who has devoted much of his spare time to helping people with disabilities has been appointed as a Government advisor.

Miro Griffiths, 18, is taking psychology, film studies and communication studies at Birkenhead Sixth Form College. He chairs a board for Whizz-kidz, a charity that provides mobility equipment for disabled children across the UK, and has taken up a paid post at the Office for Disability Issues.

Much of his time will be spent on Equality 2025, a project which aims to create a fairer society for people, regardless of disability, race, sex or sexual orientation.

After being awarded the post, following an interview at the Cabinet Office, he said: “I am interested in disability issues that confront my generation, particularly inaccessible physical environments and attitudinal discrimination.

“Social exclusion is inevitable when faced with restrictions of mobility and access by a poorly designed built environment. I am determined to contribute to disabled people’s struggle for social justice and greater control of their lives. Equality 2025 will give me the opportunity to implement a long overdue change. The role also provides me with a great stepping stone towards a better future.”

Kathryn Podmore, principal of Birkenhead College, said: “Miro is an exceptional young man and I have no doubt his contribution to policies will be tremendous.”
