Who goes where
Mike Newby has been elected chair of the Universities Council for the Education of Teachers for three years. Professor Newby succeeds Ian Kane, who has held the post since September 1995.
Heather Crouch of University College, Nene, has been elected vice-chair of UCET for three years in succession to Professor Ivan Reid. Professor John Tomlinson continues as academic secretary.
Gateshead College has made David Cheetham as its new principal in succession to Chris Hughes, who left in August to become chief executive of the Further Education Development Agency. Mr Cheetham has been deputy principal at the college for the past seven years.
Manchester Metropolitan University has appointed Callum Thomas, former head of environmental solutions at Manchester Airport, to a newly created chair of sustainable aviation. The professorial chair is the first of its kind and will involve the university in work with Manchester Airport and the aviation industry.
Derek Mortimer has announced that he will retire as principal and chief executive of University College, Suffolk, from the end of the current academic year. He will have spent 13 years as principal of the college, during which time it has become the largest centre in Suffolk for the full-time education and training of 16 to 19-year-olds and expanded its full-time higher education to provide academic and vocational programmes for more than 2,600 students.
Ann Brown, previously vice-principal of New College, Telford, has been appointed principal of Ludlow College, Shropshire.
The Welsh Development Agency is sponsoring the first university chair of entrepreneurship to be created in the principality. Ken Board, head of electrical and electronic engineering at the University of Wales, Swansea, will take up the new post this month.
