PAULA RIDLEY, pictured, is to be the next director of the UK branch of the Calouste Gulbenkian Foundation, which makes grants totalling more than pound;2 million a year for social welfare, arts, education and Anglo-Portuguese cultural projects. She will succeed the present director, Ben Whitaker, in October. Ms Ridley OBE has chaired the Liverpool Housing Action Trust since 1993 and been chairman of the Victoria and Albert Museum since last November. She was on the Royal Commission on long-term care for the elderly that reported recently and has been a school governor.
Mark Goldring has been app-
ointed chief executive of Voluntary Service Overseas. He replaces David Green who left in June to join the British Council as director general. Mr Goldring began his career as a VSO volunteer in Malaysia and is currently its overseas director.
David Bull joined UNICEF, the United Nations Children’s Fund, this week as the new executive director of the UK Committee. Mr Bull had been director of Amnesty International’s UK section since 1990.
Oona Stannard is the new director of the Catholic Education Service. Mrs Stannard was until her appointment a member of Her Majesty’s Inspectorate specialising in local education authorities. She succeeds Margaret Smart OBE, who has retired.
Library and Information Commission member Bob McKee took over on Monday as chief executive of the Library Association. Dr McKee, a former secondary teacher, was assistant chief executive of Solihull Metropolitan Borough. He succeeds Ross Shimmon, who has moved to Holland to become secretary general of the International Federation of Library Associations and Institutions.
Roy Jones becomes the first ever professor of sports technology at Loughborough University. Professor Jones will direct the introduction of a new BSc degree in sports technology.
John Kay, the first director of Oxford University’s pound;45m Said Business School is to step down from his post after seeing through its establishment. Professor Kay will re-join London Economics, the consultancy firm he co-founded. Anthony Hopwood, former director of the school’s MBA programme and professor of operations management, has been appointed acting director.
