An adult in an unpleasant job can change it. A pupil in an unpleasant school situation can`t.
If school offers pupils little, or in fact a hard time, they will vote with their feet. If these 55,000 truants who miss school each day were asked why they truanted their answers would reveal the deficiencies of the system, but chiefly the lack of choice.
These 55,000, believe it or not, want to learn. It`s just that we don`t teach them what they want to learn. No one asks them what they want to learn. All the prosecutions in the world won`t make a truant willing to return to school in those circumstances.
