Why the keyboard is mightier than the pen

I entirely agree that touch-typing should be compulsory in every primary school. It's an essential life skill. There can't be many jobs now that do not involve regular contact with a keyboard, and the ability to touch-type increases the efficiency of the computer user massively over even the fastest two-finger pecker.

Back in the mid-1970s my mum taught me (at the age of nine) to touch-type on a clunky old manual typewriter. I've blessed her for it ever since. I am typing these words at a good 60 or so words per minute without needing to take my eyes off the screen. Imagine how much time I'll save in a lifetime over someone who has never learnt this fundamental skill.
