Our daughter, now 13, has severe learning difficulties. We are fortunate to live in a small town where both the primary and high school has a special unit.
This means that our daughter can benefit from the best of both worlds: specialist, small group teaching within the unit, and inclusion into mainstream lessons. A direct alternative for us would be a long taxi journey to a special school in another town.
As parents, we acknowledge that inclusion is no easy option. There have been many challenges, and more to come, we know.
But for us, inclusion is more than an educational concept: it is about our daughter's need and right to belong to her local community. We thank Worcestershire for allowing her this opportunity.
