Will Beckham answer our call?

AS David Beckham leads his team out in today’s crunch World Cup match against Brazil, teachers are secretly plotting a new role for the England captain.

Together with pregnant wife Victoria, Becks has been nominated as a patron of the Teacher Support Network, which runs the national teacher and governor telephone support lines. The post has been left vacant by the death of Her Majesty Queen Elizabeth The Queen Mother.

However, Posh and Becks, the undisputed monarchs of popular culture, are not the only royals to be nominated by visitors to the network’s website. “Perhaps it would be a good idea to start Prince William off in a job like this so that he gets experience,” says one loyal subject, while another nominates the tennis-loving Duchess of Kent.

“David Puttnam doesn’t have a job at the moment, does he?” quips another.

A spokeswoman for the network, which receives around 14,000 calls a year, agreed that someone like Lord Puttnam, outgoing chairman of the General Teaching Council England, “would be good for us”.

“We want someone who is contemporary, relevant to education today, and who can reach out to a lot of people,” she said.

She refused to be drawn on who will figure in a potential list of patrons to go before trustees in September, but there is still time to get your suggestions in at www.teacher support.infofusetalk.
