A researcher who has attracted controversy by questioning the wisdom of placing secondary pupils in maths sets has won Pounds 1,000 for writing this year’s “outstanding book on education”.
Dr Jo Boaler, a former researcher at King’s College, London, received the award from the Standing Conference on Studies in Education. The chair of the judges’ committee, Professor Paul Croll of Reading University, said that Dr Boaler, now at Stanford University, California, had produced “a fascinating and scholarly study of teaching approaches and pupil responses”.
Experiencing School Mathematics, is published by Open University Press. The Pounds 500 runner’s-up prize was awarded to Graham Haydon for Teaching About Values, published by Cassell.
