More than three out of four (76 per cent) are over the age of 40, while secondary teachers narrowly outstrip primary colleagues in the drive for higher status and pay.
Some 48.8 per cent are from primary and 49.8 per cent from secondary.
Fewer than one in four (23 per cent) are in their 30s. Twenty-seven are in their 60s.
Matthew MacIver, GTC registrar, said his early estimate that around 3,000 teachers would eventually take up places was likely to be close to the mark. Many initial applicants may not follow through.
Mr MacIver was responding to concerns that not all 5,800 teachers who registered interest would find places with universities and other providers which can only accommodate 3,000-4,000.
