SportScotland has injected a further pound;138,000 into women’s football. Much of it will be directed to the schools’ game and to support the framework of nine development officers across Scotland.

There are an estimated 20,000 girls and women currently playing the game regularly and 63,000 primary and secondary school girls have tried it.

“The funding will be used to create even more opportunities for participation in the sport and will develop players’ skills, whether in their first class at school or through a league club at competition level,” explained the Minister for Sport, Patricia Ferguson.

“Regular sports participation has regular health and fitness benefits and, in addition, team sports bring people together, developing personal and social skills and building self-confidence.”
