Traditional narrative, whether first-person or third-person, holds no appeal for some children. Fiction does come in other forms, so why not try them with Ian Whybrow’s Little Wolf books (there are now three). Both the epistolary format and the Molesworth-speak (familiar to fans of Ronald Searle) will appeal to readers with an eye for the small detail.
In Little Wolf’s Haunted Hall for Small Horrors (Collins Children’s Books Pounds 9.99), Little Wolf reluctantly agrees to his younger brother, Smellybreff, being made deputy head of Haunted Hall School. The name is added to the letter-head, first by hand, then in print. Tony Ross’s illustrations embellish the humour.
