Working with the extract

Places are as important in autobiography as people. In this piece, which is another winner from last year, the writer recalls a special place where she used to go every year for her holidays. Her descriptions of the place, the weather, the activities all help to convey a convincing and evocative memory of childhood pleasure. However, the concluding paragraph faces the realisation that this memory may not be accurate, or seen from a more adult perspective may seem less enchanting, so for the time being she will not revisit but hold it clear and beautiful in her memory. Read and talk about the piece. Look particularly at the way the writer makes the descriptions come alive through the use of adjectives and similes. Talk about the effect of the last paragraph on the reader.
