TONY Blair’s surprise visit to the Technology Colleges Trust’s conference last week in Birmingham led to heightened security there.

Professor Ted Wragg, doyen of Exeter University and The TES back page, said: “I was a bit disturbed by the security: good citizens like you and me being frisked for weapons of mass destruction just on the off-chance that Chris Woodhead might be coming...”

* Last week’s Diary said Estelle Morris taught at Whalley Range high school in Manchester. In fact, she attended the school as a pupil.
