Write Away 4 is a competition for pupils aged 7 to 10. It is a chance for young writers to find a real audience for their writing, to explore new styles and voices - and to win prizes. Winners may get to meet an author and hear what he or she thinks of their writing!

First-person writing features in the National Literacy Strategy - there is potential for it in each year: letters, stories that raise issues, stories about imagined worlds, stories with familiar settings, stories from different cutures. Autobiography has a specific focus in Year 6. The teaching suggestions here can be used in the literacy hour and beyond. Shared reading and discussion of texts are appropriate for the literacy hour, as are planning, drafting, exploring writing styles and group drama. Longer periods will be needed for the full writing process.

Teaching suggestions by Lorraine Dawes, English and Literacy Co-ordinator, London Borough of Redbridge. To order the Write Away book, call 01454 617370
