The competition is explained in a booklet called Write Away which can be obtained free from NATE. It contains specially commissioned autobiographical pieces by well-known writers, with suggestions on how children can improve their own writing. It can be used as a photocopiable resource long after the competition is over. Generous cash prizes will be awarded to individual winners, and their schools will be paid the cost of a writer's workshop. For details and the booklet write to: Write Away, National Association for the Teaching of English, 50 Broadfield Road, Sheffield S8 0XJ.
Teachers who missed the last English Extra still have time to enter pupils for the TES Children's Literary Project, a creative writing competition for 10 to 14-year-olds organised with McDonald's Restaurants and the National Association for the Teaching of English.
