THE Diary hates to go on about The Man Who Used To Inspect Schools for The Queen, but it must take issue with a recent prediction from Doug McAvoy. The NUT leader was way off the mark when he said that teachers would stop buying the Daily Telegraph, one of Chris Woodhead’s new employers.

Bernard Brennan, ead of St Bernard’s RC primary in Ellesmere Port, Cheshire, writes to say that he intends to order many copies of the august journal next term (see letter, page 18). “It will be a delight to use certain pages ... to pulp into papier mache and for the children to wipe mud from their football boots.”
