Young Writer magazine

TES books editor Geraldine Brennan on the inside literary track

The current issue of Young Writer magazine, for anyone of school age who enjoys writing, reports that Herefordshire company Sun Valley Foods has donated a year's subscription (pound;10 for three issues) to every school in the county and hopes other businesses will be inspired to pick up this opportunity for positive publicity.

The core readership is 10 to 16-year-olds, but Young Writer publishes work by children as young as eight. It offers writing tips from professionals, drafting and editing exercises, author interviews conducted by its readers, and competitions (this month, children are asked to write the first chapter of an Egmont Banana reader). Most importantly, it provides children with encouragement to be self-starters and a chance to get into print and belong to a supportive and creative network. See
