Let’s give headteachers some space
I applaud Sir Tim Brighouse for the sentiment behind his article “Headship shouldn’t be a vanishing act” (30 January). I would also totally agree with his praise for Steve Munby, as I have witnessed Mr Munby’s leadership qualities.
However, headteachers do need to create a space for themselves. They are key leaders who must be able to reflect on the dayto-day practice of the school and plan for improvements. They should never become so indispensable that this space is compromised.
I recently witnessed a school leader being recalled from a conference after a parent refused to leave the premises unless the headteacher met them. In my opinion, the internal organisation of that school had gone wrong. No one person should become that essential. Be seen, be around to listen to your staff but also create a space to lead.

When leaders act like mum or dad, staff act like children. Be more like the weird uncle who lets kids steer the car when no one is looking.
