The article about calculators in primary school maths tests (“Calculator ban does not compute, say experts”, 16 November) reports that Elizabeth Truss wants calculators banned as “they breed a reliance on technology to complete basic sums”.
A sum is the total amount resulting from the addition of two or more numbers, amounts, or items. The correct term for maths questions is equation; this would include addition, subtraction, division and multiplication operations.
