When I heard the LSC had hired a “roller coaster simulator”, I assumed it was something to do with training principals in the ups and downs of the quango’s funding regime.

Apparently, though, the machine was deployed in South Shields, where local youths were offered a ride to tempt them to join Connexions, the advice service for young people.

According to the PR people, it was one of several events across Tyne and Wear and Northumberland to which teenagers have been “flocking” in order to learn more about the Educational Maintenance Allowance scheme.

This cuddly face of Connexions is a far cry from the days before its launch, when it was suggested the outfit should be called the Youth Support Service - until they realised this would soon be abbreviated to the Youth SS.
