YouTube entrepreneur and multi-millionaire Jamal Edwards is to focus his efforts on education by teaching young people about “social media etiquette and enterprise”.

The amateur filmmaker who has since gone on to become one of the biggest YouTube sensations of his generation said he wanted to help young people better equip themselves with tools when using the likes of Facebook, Twitter and Instagram.

“Social media is always there, and it’s only going to get bigger so it would be good to educate people about it, but not trying to control it,” Mr Edwards told TES at the education technology conference Bett.

“It means teaching kids how to present themselves on social media. A lot of parents and teachers will think kids are not using it but they are. It’s not about taking it away from them because they will just want it more.”

Mr Edwards, who was handed an MBE for his services to music, said he wanted to teach young people about the “good things and the bad things” on social media, and “how they can learn from them”.

“So, if employers are looking at your social media profiles when you’re going for a job, it’s about making sure you are not saying things on there you shouldn’t be, making sure you shouldn’t be releasing information you shouldn’t be. It would be good to prevent that kind of thing,” he said.

Through his YouTube channel SB:TV, Mr Edwards has helped launch the career of a host of musicians, such as Ed Sheernan and counts billionaire entrepreneur Sir Richard Branson as a personal friend.

Look out for Jamal Edwards in this week’s TES podcast out tomorrow.
