Zoom in on the Edwardians

An interactive DVD that focuses on the Edwardian era has been launched in North Lanarkshire. Until now, environmental studies resources have tended to focus on the Victorians and the Second World War.

George Kavanagh, quality improvement officer with the council, said the DVD was compatible with both PCs and Apple computers. Its novelty lies in the smartboard technology involved and the interaction with images, but he believes its cross-curricular nature fits well with A Curriculum for Excellence, as it combines history, society and the arts movement of the time, including Charles Rennie Mackintosh.

The DVD is the result of a partnership between North Lanarkshire council and the Royal Commission on the Ancient and Historical Monuments of Scotland, with the assistance of Moriarti Design. Its aim is to aid learning for P6 and P7 pupils on the Edwardians or the early 20th century in general, as part of environmental studies.

Two teachers, Carrie Lawson from St Edward’s Primary and Marion Cuthbertson from New Stevenston Primary, helped to research and develop the DVD. Mrs Cuthbertson said the pupils who piloted the resource particularly liked being able to explore images using the whiteboard technology and zoom facility.
