This 10-slide lesson activity allows students to explore how the Birling family (and Gerald) each wronged Eva Smith. Looking at the play through the lens of the ‘Seven Deadly Sins’ according to Catholic doctrine, we can see which sins each character commits, which may help us to determine which character - if any - is the most responsible for the death of Eva Smith. The lesson includes a table-based activity and questions for students to consider. These activities always lead to fascinating discussions and intellectual debates about the play. A revision sheet that helps students analyse key quotations within four core themes in the play: social responsibility, class, gender and age. The students need to use two layers of meaning, make links to Edwardian context, and identify and comment on writer’s methods. There is an extension task - students need to comment conceptually on Priestley’s intentions. I get students to annotate around the quotes.
