In this lesson, students will learn how Athens was governed as a direct democracy. They will learn what the key words- oligarchy, monarchy and tyranny is and will understand how the direct democratic model worked in Athens.
They will also learn about the Athenian criminal court system and will then enact two different scenarios using drama to better understand the systems. They will be given two scenarios to write down their arguments either for/against and as a class will role play these.
This lesson is heavily guided with all of the information needed included. A video and a quiz also makes it engaging for all.
This lesson is intended for KS2 but can easily be modified to suit KS3.

It gives information at the beginning about geography and history (Timeline), identifies differences between learned Athenians and warlike Spartans; then there's the Gods and the Olympic Games, Life in the Spartan Army; then the philosophers/educational elite and finally a couple of brief Ancient Myth samples - Theseus and the Minotaur and Hercules and his 12 tasks. Another assembly written by Sue Russell on the Ideas of the Ancient Greeks is based on Unit 14 and covers different material - including the origins of our alphabet.

Just finished this assembly with my Y5 class, it went so well and they loved it.
It involves an ‘X factor’ style show where each Greek god auditions to be king of the gods, whilst telling the audience a little bit about the Ancient Greeks.
It involves throwing confetti at the audience, a dance routine to music from Disney’s Hercules, and a boy dressing up as Cheryl Cole…if you want.
Adapt and use as you want. Enjoy.
