Do you students ever say that they are good multitaskers? Use this activity to show them that their typical perception of multitasking is actually an act of “task switching” and is a hindrance to learning. By using one class timer, each student will discover how long it takes them to complete two separate writing challenges. After the challenges are complete, you can use this data to have students find the five number summary in order to create and compare box plots of the challenge times. This activity can lead to a great class discussion that can encourage students to avoid distractions when they are doing school work.
This 16-page resource booklet contains a wide range of challenging and engaging comprehension activities for use throughout the reading of Kit Wright’s poem 'The Magic Box.’ Teachers have found the activities particularly useful throughout teaching, or for revision or guided reading sessions. Students have found these resources extremely engaging, and it is clearly highlighted within each task regarding which assessment strands the task is designed to demonstrate.
It is provided in both Word (to allow for easy editing) and PDF (to ensure for consistency of formatting between computers).
Activities within the booklet include (amongst many others):
‘Analysing Context’ - helping students to ‘Show understanding of the relationships between texts and the contexts in which they were written.’
‘Analysing Subject Matter, Language and Structure’ - to help students to ‘Analyse the language, form and structure used by a writer to create meanings and effects, using relevant subject terminology where appropriate.’
‘Diary Entry’ - to help students to ‘Use a range of vocabulary and sentence structures for clarity, purpose and effect, with accurate spelling and punctuation. Make an informed personal response, recognising that other responses to a text are possible and evaluating these.’
‘The Speaker’ - to help students to ‘Read, understand and respond to texts. Students should be able to: maintain a critical style and develop an informed personal response use textual references, including quotations, to support and illustrate interpretations.’
A pair of short activities that could be used at the start of a lesson. Working out speeds, the second activitiy will need a bit of thought! Lots more activities like this in my Olympics Maths page - enjoy! Regularly updated
A differentiated activity that gets students out of their seats. A change from worksheet activities. Print each of the PDFs on the appropriate coloured paper. There are 12 different questions in each set. You may need to copy enough for each student to complete all the questions (just in case).
How I use it: Students complete a RAGB differentiated activity to enable them to self-assess and select the appropriate colour to start on (example slide included). They then go to the ‘magic box’ with that colour label, pick out a card, take it back to their desk, stick it in their book, and answer the question. When they have answered 3 questions they self-assess using answers provided (usually turned upside down next to the appropriate magic box). If they get all 3 correct they can move onto the next colour box, or alternatively can decide to complete the remaining 3 questions in that colour for further practice. If they get any wrong, they MUST seek help from a peer or the teacher to understand why. They then complete the remaining 3 questions and avoid making the same mistakes again.
The magic boxes are labelled Red, Amber and Green. I ALWAYS have blue extension activities available for any student who completes the Green activity and needs to be challenged further (usually exam or problem solving questions).
Alphabet challenge activity - ideally for transistion or to lead into a PE lesson if it is too hot for running around PE !!!
Identify around the school grounds 2 or more things that begin with that letter as the example e.g p- playground and then get the kids off identifying their school environment ! Ticks the outdoor learning box ! And can be used well across all age groups even secondary if needed !!

**Now available in a good value Christmas Puzzles BUNDLE with this festive Literacy / SPaG puzzles pack: Christmas Literacy SPaG Puzzles **
An engaging alternative to worksheets, these festive winter puzzles make ideal starter, early finisher or homework activities for this special time of year. Similar to codebreaker puzzles, a Christmas-related word is revealed after completing mental arithmetic calculations. Each puzzle contains a grid. Within each box is a calculation and a letter. Pupils circle any boxes containing mistakes. Then they assemble letters from the circled boxes to reveal the Christmas word. Puzzles can be completed individually or in pairs / groups.
Pupils often forget or avoid checking their work for errors so it’s great to get them carefully checking in these puzzles. Spotting common errors may help them remember to check their own work and help them avoid common errors themselves.
Concepts include: Addition, Subtraction, Multiplication and Division, Times Tables, Doubling and Halving, Multiplying and Dividing by 10 and 100, Place Value, Negative Numbers, Fractions, Percentages and Decimals (Not all concepts feature in Set B).

Firstly, if you choose to download my resource(s), please take the time to leave a rating (as I know most of don't really bother) - I do really value your feedback!
I created this resource, to be used as a starter, to allow students to get their brains warmed up, ready for learning. It is a PowerPoint, that contains thunks and questions that students need to think about to find an answer or solution to the question.
They could also be used as a stretch and challenge activities or as a plenary at the end of the lesson. A good idea, would be to print these off and display them around your classroom - as this would help students to prepare for their learning and become and independent learner, by thinking outside of the box.
The PPT contains 25+ thunks, each slide includes a thunk and an image to represent it. Examples of the thunks include:
* Does time exist?
* Where does electricity come from?
* If I switch of a light in a room, do the walls change colour?
* Is a toy that no body wants or plays with still a toy?
* If you could pick a colour for each day of the week, what colour would you choose?
* And lots more!

This resource I created for those students who are very demanding and want to know why the bond angle of 109.5 exists for the tetrahedral shape. It could also be an excellent starter activity for say 10 min and also tick the box for numeracy box !! I used this this year encourage motivation and to prove it cannot be 90 degrees which otherwise learners find hard top accept.
I have also attached the answers and the worksheet that can be drawn on the board OR printed out for the students.
KS3 GCSE FRENCH PRESENT TENSE CONJUGATION PRACTICE FIVE WORKBOOKS @ £1 EACH 150 conjugations in each workbook, 750 conjugations in total, differentiated challenges, answer keys & verb reference lists ideal for KS3 French students who are beginning to work with compound sentences and longer texts, and generally developing their knowledge and understanding of conjugation and tense in French.
The verbs groups are:
regular French -ER verbs
regular & irregular French -RE verbs
regular & irregular French -IR & -OIR verbs
regular & irregular high-frequency French verbs
reflexive verbs
I use these kinds of workbooks in lots of different ways: for practice during the introduction phase, for independent choice in class time, for homework, for practice, reinforcing and revision during holidays and at return to class, and for individual activities during cover lessons - I move onto conjugation quite quickly in my language learning programs, so that students can apply language practically and creatively, which is essential for progressing in language learning, as well as consolidating language and grammatical concepts. I tend to give my students regular opportunities to practice the conjugations during the whole schools year, and they find this really useful for mapping their own progress and developing their overall understanding of how French conjugation ‘works’.
The workbooks focus on the correct conjugation of verbs, rather than usage, but I definitely find it useful to remind students of a number of things when focusing on or revising tense and verb conjugation. For example, with the French present tense, I encourage students to look for patterns across all the verbs, such as the singular pronouns, including the pronoun on form being identical, pointing out also that on is commonly used in spoken and written French, also meaning we, unlike the English pronoun one.
Language learners do often try to conflate what they know about conjugation in their first language, and the language they are currently learning. For example, with students whose whose first language is English, I frequently see attempts such as je suis mettre for I am putting or similarly je fais répondre for I do answer. I also refer frequently the difference in usage between English and French, and this is important particularly when explaining when and in which contexts to use the simple present and the continuous / progressive present tense.
Though the workbook focuses solely on the correct conjugation of verbs, and does not look at word order in the context of full sentences, there are conjugation patterns that students can learn, recognise and apply, ensuring that their spoken and written French is accurate, and that their understanding of French across the skills of listening, speaking, reading and writing is robust. Students become very familiar and confident the more they work with conjugation, and these quick conjugations certainly help to embed that successfully.
Each set is structured as follows:
Two alphabetical verb reference lists: French-English and English-French.
Three conjugation challenges, each with 50 individual conjugations:
Conjugation Challenge 1: each verb conjugated in French across a range of pronouns, with students writing the corresponding English verb conjugation.
Conjugation Challenge 2: gives the infinitive of each verb in French, specifying the target pronoun. Students write the corresponding verb conjugation in French.
Conjugation Challenge 3: students write the corresponding French verb conjugation, and its infinitive, from an English prompt.
Notes and Next Steps, which encourages students to think about how their understanding of French conjugation works, reflect on what progress they have made, what their targets for improvement might realistically be, and what they might reasonably do in order to meet those targets. They also use this page to note any new verbs they learn, which helps them build up a comprehensive verb vocabulary. It’s also a useful tool to guide and inform whole-group discussion about learning and progress in general, which is a really popular activity with my students.
answer key which is absolutely essential in my view. Answer keys help students develop more independence in their learning, and provide them with an additional opportunity to engage with language and grammar. They also genuinely enjoy correcting their own - and particularly each others’ - work, and they’re a great teacher time saver too, which is always a good thing!
