This folder includes a powerpoint which guides students through the poem. The first activity helps them to work out what the Latin sentence “Dulce et Decorum est…” means. This is followed by looking at the poem in terms of Owen’s use of similes, metaphors and imagery. Two example paragraphs of analysis of the first lines of the poem serve as a model to encourage students to write some analysis of their own. A storyboard worksheet is also included which students could complete for homework.This lesson could be used in conjunction with the background lesson on Wilfred Owen, also found here.

This engaging activity prompts pupils to engage with the imagery used in Wilfred Owen's war poem "Dulce et Decorum est". Pupils are required to read the poem, while locating examples of imagery that correspond to provided images. Pupils must then document the quote from the poem and analyse the effect of the imagery, with the PowerPoint presentation providing the answer and prompting further analysis. They are also encouraged to discuss what they believe to be the most impactful use of imagery in the poem. This activity can be used successfully in a study of War Poetry, imagery or as a supplementary activity in a KS3 History class.

Included in the PowerPoint is: -Analysis of Language -Context -A slide about Pope as early versions of the poem were written for her -Meaning of the title -Structure -Attitudes themes and ideas -Rhyming scheme -Poetic Techniques There is one link included and it leads to a dramatisation of the meeting between Owen and Sassoon during WW1 which is followed by a reading of the poem.
