This is an Examview version of my set of worksheets / quizzes about the History Channel documentary, "The Real Story of Halloween."
As such, these Real Story of Halloween worksheets in Examview format are perfect for electronic instruction. They include:
~~~50 multiple choice questions~~~
~~~Two Examview .tst files: with and without video time stamps~~~
~~~All questions presented in "video order" so students can answer them as they watch~~~
About "The Real Story of Halloween":
This documentary, appropriate for students in both middle school and high school, usually airs on the History Channel each October. It can often also be found on a variety of video streaming sites. The best way to find it online is to run a simple Google Search. The program lasts about 42 minutes, making it a great fit into a one-period class.
---I BELIEVE IN MAKING CLASS AS FUN AS POSSIBLE---
"The Real Story of Halloween" is a fascinating look into the historical roots of our current-day American Halloween customs. The video asks, and then answers, a variety of interesting and fun questions such as:
• Why do we wear masks and costumes on Halloween?
• Why is it customary to hand out treats on that night?
• Where did the tradition of going door to door start?
Along the way, a number of historical eras, peoples, and events are discussed, including:
• The ancient Celts
• The ancient Romans
• Europeans during the early and late Middle Ages
• The "Gunpowder Plot" / Guy Fawkes Day in England
• Colonial America
• The Great Depression in America
• The Post-War Boom and 1960s America
• The Current Day
My personal opinion is that most history teachers would probably enjoy watching this video even if they had no plans to use it in class -- it's simply that fun of a ride. Using it with students, of course, is even better. As long as my world history classes are where they should be each October 31, I like to take a day out of the regular curriculum and use this video. They enjoy it a lot, particularly because it is both fast-paced and fascinating -- but they also learn a great deal about the various periods in history that contributed to our modern conception of how to celebrate Halloween.
---I BELIEVE IN TEACHER CONVENIENCE---
To that end, I have embedded convenience features into these Real Story of Halloween worksheets:
One of the two Examview .tst files provided includes a time stamp on every question, revealing when that question is addressed in the video.
The other file is without time stamps for teachers who prefer none.
This giant crossword is designed to be completed in groups and features 100 quiz-style clues on all things Scottish. It could be used for Burns Night on 25th January, other Scottish celebrations such as Saint Andrew's Day, end of term fun, start of term fun, as part of a Scotland topic or simply to get students discussing Scottish history, politics, geography, sport, wildlife, popular culture, traditions and more. It suits Third and Fourth Level pupils at Secondary (Key Stage 3 and KS4 and other equivalents) and would also work well at Second Level in Primary - P6 and P7 (Year 5 and 6 and other equivalents). There is a support sheet of answers in alphabetical order, which could be provided for younger or less able pupils in order to make completion of the puzzle significantly easier but still a fun challenge. You might want to give this support sheet out once students have done as much as they can do without help.
Due to the wide range of facts in the puzzle, it works best when students can pool their knowledge in a group. They could research any clues they are unable to work out for themselves. The crossword works especially well if you print it in A3 but it works fine in A4 too. A solution grid is also provided, which could be printed or displayed on the whiteboard at the end.
Includes: Robert Burns, Scottish Wars of Independence, Scottish Parliament, rivers, cities, inventors, art, literature, music, clothing, food, sports stars, mountains, islands, actors, Kings and Queens and more.
Also for Burns Night to suit Second and Third Level (upper KS2 and early KS3), I have a reading comprehension and other literacy activities on Robert Burns and Burns Suppers: Robert Burns Reading Comprehension and Activities
I hope you and your pupils have lots of fun using this. If you can spare a moment I would be grateful for a review. Many thanks.
Gothic Horror Elements - A Multi Media Introduction
A short sequence of lessons on traditional and twisted fairytale writing, used to finish up the term. Some of the activities were taken from another TES user, who kindly uploaded an excellent, and a much more structured sequence of lessons on fairtytale writing, and thus deserves much of the credit.
It was aimed at my low ability yr7s, and went down a treat. The outcomes have been removed, and the entire sequence can be messed around with and adapted to suit your classes. Note: Some of the lessons are missing as they were saved on a different computer.
These materials have been designed to provide a brief introduction to Gothic horror and are also great for Halloween! I have provided a variety of multi media resources including two short animated videos and a ‘Prezi’ (like a Powerpoint but more fun!) along with associated quizzes and texts as a PDF resource which can be tailored to the needs of the students. There are two versions in this package. One for older students, and one for students of ESL or younger students
The materials can be printed out and used in a multi media classroom, and the Prezi can be downloaded and installed on a computer for ease of use. Alternatively, copies of the PDF, which contains links to all online materials, can be purchased for students to install on their own computers so they can access everything directly.
16 pages
The lesson contains;
Version 1: Ages 14-16
1. PDF student and teacher documents that give an outline of the history of Gothic horror stories and the elements that are recognized as important to the genre.
2. A link on the PDF worksheet to view online or download the Prezi which contains 9 slides that describe the elements of a Gothic story visually with humorous speech bubbles and full narration.
3. Links to two animated videos and learning materials for new vocabulary, listening and reading comprehension quizzes along with a comic writing exercise.
4. A set of teachers notes and quiz answers along with a contact e.mail for enquiries.
Version 2: Younger students or those studying ESL
1. The same PDF student and teacher resources. However, these have simplified language and vocabulary and have been changed from book form to discrete lesson parts that can be distributed as handouts in any order. These have the same links to the movies and 'Prezi'.
2. There are also a wider range of review materials for this version, including a crossword, reading review, word quizzes, comic book text fill and a reading and word test based on the language learned.
If you have any questions about using Prezi or the iPad lesson, please feel free to contact me through TpT or download the preview and use my mail address.
This paper explores the concept of pragmatic meta-analytic studies in eLearning. Much educational technology literature focuses on developers and teachers describing and reflecting on their experiences. Few connections are made between these experiential ‘stories’. The data set is fragmented and offers few generalisable lessons. The field needs guidelines about what can be learnt from such single-case reports.
