This word bank uses shades to indicate to the writer the intensity of a feeling.
Use the resource to support Key Stage 2 and 3 writes when writing character descriptions, narratives and persuasive writing.
The resource is a visual representation of the nuances of definitions when selecting synonyms.
I created this resource as I was struggling to find a word bank suitable for secondary school students, so this is suited for AQA Language Paper 1, Section B tasks, but could also be used across other phases and exam boards.
Prints A3 size so that all words are visible, the categories are divided into colour-coded sections for sensory language, setting, colour and characterisation. Within these sections there are lists of words that describe:
- Texture
- Taste/smell
- Sound
- Brightness/darkness
- Clarity / opacity
- Shape
- Speech
- Body movements
- Size: small/large
- Good weather/ bad weather
- Temperature: hot/cold
- Positive personality traits
- Negative personality traits
- Positive emotions
- Negative emotions
- Colour: black, brown, grey, red, orange, yellow, green, blue, purple, white

Useful for KS1 and KS2 to boost vocabulary. The synonyms can be used to describe character’s appearance, feelings and characteristics.
This resource is presented in an A4 or A5 format so can be printed to suit your preferences.
This is a simple page where the pupil is asked to sort and record a range of words which can later be used in their own writing. I love this activity as it has a range of uses: can be sent as a homework to teach the child how to use it independently with their own writing or reading, it can encourage children to take ownership over their work or to read a teachers comments more purposefully. I often hightlight an opener in a pupil’s work and they feel proud enough to record it in their word bank for later use. Most importantly, generally I use this as an assessment task throughout the term helping me to see if a child has misunderstood a term or has a repetitive spelling problem with a pattern.
Enjoy!

A sentence opener word bank that can be used at the beginning of a lesson or support children throughout the lesson. The sentence opener bank has been broken into three key areas:
- time connectives
-adverbs
- feelings
This wordbank was created to pre-teach children vocabulary before reading each chapter of Cogheart by Peter Bunzl. It includes words that needed to be defined to understand the sentence, unique words children are not likely to see often and ones my classed asked about. It also includes pictures where necessary. It is not meant to be a comprehensive list – please feel free to add to it any other words from the book.
Build your students’ vocabulary by creating their own word bank from texts they’re reading. Make sure that you have a dictionary - oh sorry ipad - at hand for them to find the actual definition!
