New GCSE AQA Physics lesson on 'Renewable Energy Resources (Solar, Wind, Hydroelectricity, Wave, tidal, geothermal)' written in line with new AQA Physics specification. Lesson starts with a series of riddles relating to different types of energy resources. The need for renewable/alternative energy resources is highlight through questioning regarding previously studied fossil fuels, nuclear power and biofuels. The different types of renewable energy resources are reviewed for note taking and discussion. Following a summary of key renewable energy resource advantages and disadvantages the pupils are given a writing challenge to compare and contrast different types of energy resources. The lesson can be done as regular in class lesson or alternatively can be given as webquest for pupils to complete and then slides used for key summary and consolidation. GCSE Physics Island Energy Challenge This lesson is most suitable for students studying AQA GCSE Physics or Combined Science. It is best used at the end of P1- Energy, or before exams as a revision exercise. Description of task Students work as individuals or small groups to design a new energy infrastructure for a small island with a growing population. They are given a budget and a target for energy production, as well as information on the price, energy production and pros and cons of using each energy resource on the island. They will be expected to weigh up the the costs, benefits and negative environmental/ socioeconomic impacts and come up with a plan. They need to justify their plan and be ready to present it to the class at the end of the lesson or during the next lesson. Duration: 1-2 hour long lessons The first lesson can be used for planning and designing the energy infrastructure, and a second lesson could be added for presenting to the class and feedback. Resources included PowerPoint with starter exercise, lesson objectives, main task briefing, example of work to be produced. PDF with the briefing and resources info/ pictures for students. Hand drawn map of the island to print on A3 paper. Materials needed Pens, scissors, glue, calculators, printed A3 map and briefing for each group.

This is a resource which meets specification points from the NEW AQA GCSE Physics 'Energy' SoW. Other lessons from this SoW can be found in my TES Shop: https://www.tes.com/teaching-resources/shop/SWiftScience This lesson begins by pupils considering which of the energy resources are renewable or non-renewable. Pupils will then use the posters, which can be placed around the room or on pupils desks, to complete a table which identifies how the energy resource generates electricity and the advantages and disadvantages of each energy resource. Pupils are then given a list of statements about all power stations which they need to cut and stick (or write) into two columns - advantages or disadvantages. **To challenge higher ability pupils this could be completed at the back of students books, so they cannot use information from the previous task**. Pupils can then peer-assess their work. The plenary activity is a past-paper question which involves analysing some data on the usage of different power stations between two time periods.
