The War that Saved my Life - Guided Reading & Activities

(0)
Students will love this book for the events, the character building, the cliffhangers, the happiness, and the sadness. The story begins with a child who was locked in her flat in London because she had a club foot. Her mam abused her terribly. Ada could only see the world from her window. She had no rights to an education. Any of Ada's words were returned with a punch and a night stay in a cabinet underneath the sink. Ada taught herself to walk without her mother's knowledge. Then the war came. Children in London were evacuated and Ada and her brother Jaimie went to live with a woman in the countryside who did not think she could care for the children, but she did. I have included chapter by chapter questions for students to think critically about. As students read, they will think and record the traits of the characters, give evidence, write their reactions, and learn about wartime, World War II specifically. At the end of the packet are nine activities, all that will appeal to the different interests of the diversity in your classroom.
