We look at persuasive articles and how a modelled example uses DAFOREST techniques to engage its readers, plus how you can begin a persuasive article in order to engage a reader. We look at the theme of travel writing through different holiday destinations and how we can persuade readers to want to visit these places. Ideal for KS3 and KS4 students preparing for AQA English Language Paper 2 Section B or Question 5. Fully differentiated throughout.

This resource is perfect for enabling students to build both their persuasive writing and their speaking and listening skills. Based upon the popular BBC series 'Dragons' Den', students have the opportunity to research, design, pitch, and evaluate arguments for their own inventions, whilst simultaneously analysing persuasive pitches, revising persuasive techniques, structuring arguments and articulating convincingly. Included is a 16 page booklet (I would say at least 4-5 hour lessons of tasks) that lead students to: - Introduce themselves and their interests; - Watch persuasive pitches (links included) and identify persuasive devices; - Analyse why persuasive devices are effective; - Structure an analysis appropriately; - Brainstorm ideas for an invention using imagination and helpful aiding questions; - Formulate an argument by considering key questions and counter arguments; - Write and present a persuasive pitch; - Peer-evaluate and self-evaluate persuasive pitches. I have also provided some examples of news stories featuring the worst and best pitches from the den, in order to provoke discussion about what makes a strong pitch. Persuasive Writing Word Mat to enhance children’s vocabulary in the Infant School. Children are expected to enhance their writing using phrases or words which extend their writing. This is aimed for children aged 6 to 11 years old.

A KS3 project (three-four lessons) to prepare students for a persuasive presentation on a chocolate bar they have designed. This resource is designed to prepare students for the following skills: Persuasive writing AFOREST devices Speaking and listening Understanding target audiences and purpose of text Improving vocabulary for non-fiction writing Lesson 1: LO: To analyse how advertisements use techniques to cater to differing audiences. Students watch advertisements of chocolate bars, exploring and discussing target audiences and persuasive techniques used in the adverts. Lesson 2: LO: To analyse how language is used to create effects and to persuade audiences. Students extend vocabulary to describe chocolates. Students practice using AFOREST devices to describe them and think about target audiences (packaging, flavour, etc.). You can either give the students the chocolates to taste, or you can just based this lesson on their knowledge of the chocolate flavours already. Lesson 3: LO: To create a speech that uses AFOREST and language devices to persuade audiences. Students to plan and create a chocolate bar of their own design, ready to present to the class. Students to vote on which chocolate bar was the most persuasive in its pitch to the target audience chosen by the student. Optional - extend L3 to a full writing lesson, followed by L4 as speaking and listening lesson.

A focus on the impact of emotive language in persuasive writing. One paragraph written with negative emotive language and one written with positive emotive language - both persuading for the same thing. Use this resource to help your pupils pick out the vocabulary and phrases which have an impact on the reader’s emotions and feelings. Ask: What is the overall feeling after reading the paragraph? Give them the paragraph using negative emotive language and ask them to re-write it, changing to positive emotive language but keeping the persuasive sway the same. Or vice versa. A great challenge! Use these paragraphs as a stimulus to writing their own persuasive paragraph with a choice of using negative or positive emotive language.

This SOW includes a variety of lessons/activities focusing on recapping persuasive devices and how to apply these when writing in different non-fiction formats. I have pitched this to high-ability KS3 students but it can easily be adapted to GCSE students when looking at AQA Language Paper 2 (Question 5) The SOW also has a media focus with topics such as sensationalism in the media and how this persuades/manipulates society, as well as the ethicality of this. There is also a focus on controversial debate topics and how to form and express a justifiable opinion (again tying in nicely with AQA Lang Paper 2: Section B).

Persuasive Writing Worksheet for IGCSE

This is a lesson based on the BBC show Dragon’s Den/ Shark Tank (US). In this lesson, students invent a new product which they would like to have in their life. They then write their own Dragon’s Den pitch, using DAFOREST persuasive writing features, to persuade the class to invest money into their product. There is a written model included to show pupils how to write the openings of their pitches, using persuasive language features. Then, students practice delivering the speeches in small groups before delivering them to the class. The class then vote for the winner who will gain the Dragon’s investment.
