Children need to stay safe on-line and teachers can take practical steps to increase awareness of the dangers. Three simple classroom activities can help here. E-safety consultant Dr Alan Beecham visits Rhodesway Secondary School in Bradford to work with a group of Year 9 students. Dr Beecham, Haroon Gardee, a humanities teacher, and Year 7 Inclusion Manager Max Crowther gauge pupils' reaction to a ficticious profile they created on a social networking site. The second activity highlights the dangers of sharing too much information, and the third focuses on security and privacy settings. At Stocksbridge High School in Sheffield e-safety officers apply a 'safe use of the internet' policy, run parental awareness evenings, and act as a point of contact for pupils.

News articles for teaching: Nuclear weapons

(0)
Since two bombs obliterated the cities of Hiroshima and Nagasaki in 1945 and ended the Second World War, nuclear weapons have been considered the ultimate deterrent. Have they made the world a safer place? Today, nine countries possess around 16,300 nuclear weapons. As a historic deal aims to stop Iran from joining them, this is a selection of stories which look at some of the key issues. At The Day we look at stories, explore the issues behind them and consider different opinions on what is happening. There are activities designed for homework or classwork, an explanation of difficult words and debate questions. Our articles can be used as complete lessons, starters, for extended learning or independent research. They have been written specifically for KS3, KS4 and KS5 to help them engage with events in the news. Key words: reading, form time, lesson-planning, research, homework, Iran, nuclear weapons, history, disarmament, Hiroshima and Nagasaki, power, government, politics, physics, economics, cyber security For more articles written for teachers and classrooms go to www.theday.co.uk

This is part of a full scheme of work - all powerpoints and resources have been uploaded. Powerpoints are all separate uploads, saved by lesson numbers 1,2,3 etc. There are 9 lessons in total. Also uploaded as part of this section are resources. All lessons are saved under 'Nobody Has a Private Life'. This scheme is quite old, and will need some adapting as it was written in my PGCE year. However, it's a good starting point and pupils have very much enjoyed it over the years. Also has strong citizenship links!
