I used this powerpoint and handout to tell parents about phonics in our school. Some of the information on the handout has been collected from other people's lovely resources. Hopefully it will be useful to some people.
I can't remember where I found this assessment, but I liked it and so decided to make a PowerPoint for use with the children. Anything in blue is read by the teacher (or TA) and the black words have to read/blended by the children. It includes decodeable, tricky and nonsense words. It should be used in conjunction with the word document, as some parts are just oral.
A 250 page power point with one word on each page.
Power point contains green/ decodable words and yellow/ alien- nonsense words for each of the following special friends/ digraphs/ trigraphs
ea, oi, a-e, i-e, o-e, u-e, aw, are, ur, er, ow (e.g how), ai, oa, ew, ire, ear, ure,
as well as suffixes tion, tious, cious
Can be used to aid teaching of these sounds or practice the segmenting and blending of sounds to read words
Everything you need to deliver all 10 weeks of Letters and Sounds Phase Three.
This resource includes a fully editable planning document. It is supported by 50 PowerPoint sessions, ready for you to use each day. Each one follows the recap, teach, practise and apply sequence as recommended in Letters and Sounds.
There is a handy leaflet for parents that you can send home to encourage parental support.
There are printable activities and display materials to support what is taught in the lessons. Also included is a PowerPoint of assessment activities and Word grids to record the children’s achievements.
The PowerPoints use the Comic Sans font, except for the handwriting sections which are in Sassoon. Most other resources are also in Sassoon.

I had look at the new curriculum with regards to the phonics that children have to be taught in year 1. From what I can see, it looks like the new curriculum year 1 sounds come mostly from phase 3 and 5 (or the equivalent set 2 and 3 of RML). We decided to use the RML flashcards and rhymes to teach the sounds, so this is a breakdown of what sounds are taught when, sticking to the order in which RML is taught. It goes hand in hand with the flashcards from RML with all the lovely rhymes.
I have written down all the sounds for year 1 from the new curriculum but put them in the RML order and added spelling patterns. For 2015/2016.
This is a Letters and Sounds assessment to be used for each pupil. At my school we start this assessment in Reception and we assess the children one a term. The assessment is then past up to Year 1 and Year 2. This assessment clearly tracks the children's progress assessing their knowledge of the sounds, high frequency words, blending and segmenting relevant for each phase. I hope that this proves to be a useful tool for you in your setting. This download includes:
- An original PDF version of the assessment that I use.
- An editabe Word version to tailor the assessment to meet your needs.

This bundle includes My Syllable Type Book and Hands On Activities for learning 32 different phonics patterns. It also includes my beach break syllable and baking multi-syllable words activity packs. See more information below for what is in each item:
My Syllable Type Book:
6 Syllable Type Book:
Do your students often struggle decoding words or need more practice learning their syllable types? My second graders often struggle with this concept, and need specific instruction on how decode words by learning the 6 syllable types. I designed this personal syllable type book for my students to have more practice learning the 6 syllable types, rules or decoding words by breaking them into the 6 syllable types, prefixes, suffixes, and more. My students loved this activity and their decoding skills have taken off. I hope your students enjoy this book, too!
Word Work, Phonics, Spelling Centers and Activities:
Do you need some engaging word work activities to use during your guided reading group, word work, or literacy activities? If so, this bundle is for you. This bundle follows the second grade progression. This bundle includes 35 word work units! In this bundle there are a variety of activities for each unit:
Word Sort with word work pattern headers and 36 word cards
Cloze Spelling Game Board with 36 Word Cards (a cloze spelling activity is where part of the word is omitted and students have to do some higher order thinking to figure out the word and then spell the word correctly)
Roll-A-Word (students roll a dice to read and/or spell the words by themselves or with a partner)
Word Build (Game where students combine phonemes and syllables to create words)
Word Sort
Plus other activities depending on the pattern.

If so, from my Baking Up Multi-Syllabic Words pack, here are 56 pages of segmentation (chunking), manipulation, and blending activities to help your students learn how to read. With these activities students use the baking analogy (words are made of syllables (chunks) - or ingredients - that are put together to “bake” words)
Activities Include:
•Counting Syllables Word Cards Using Two, Three, and Four Syllable Words (boxes to put counters in for each syllable in a word)
•Syllable Bakeoff – Students draw three syllable cookie cards (one of each cookie type) and create multisyllabic words. Students can use the graphic organizers to record whether the words are real or nonsense words. There are two variations on how to play.
•3 Board Games and Cards to play sorting,
Read and compare Hansel and Gretel by Anthony Browne, and Baba Yaga and the Stolen Baby by Alison Lurie, Francis Lincoln, and Baba Yaga by Tony Bradman using drama and story maps. Discuss joining sentences using or, and or but. Children write witch stories using story pegs to plan. Introduce some 'story language' and encourage interesting endings. Hamilton Group Reader, Why Not Me?, is used to build confidence in reading aloud.
Explore familiar settings through Margaret Mahy's story A Lion in the Meadow, You Choose by Nick Sharratt and There’s No Such Thing as a Dragon by Jack Kent. Children generate ideas and plan a story about an animal that lives in their house under the stairs. There is a focus on using simple punctuation and story problems and solutions.
