Suitable for EAL and young learners.
The poems deal with aspects of winter such as hibernation, snow and bare trees.
They can be used as a lesson starter or as the basis of a very basic poetry lesson.
Starter with a review of the two poems, moves into an exploration of the mark scheme and before exploring what is necessary to achieve a 6+.

This 5-6 day unit is based on the beautiful book and poem "Before Morning" by Joyce Sidman. It is a perfect winter themed poetry unit. It involves reading and interpreting the poem, exploring and writing metaphors, working as a class on a group wish poem and finally writing an independent invocation poem.
You will need the book for this unit, or be able to watch it online. "Book Look" on You Tube has a version of it that is quite good.
The unit includes a pack of detailed full page lesson plans with differentiated tasks for students outlined. It also includes 31 slides for presenting the lesson on an interactive whiteboard (these are saved as 'portrait' and so when opening in Adobe Reader, click 'View' and 'Rotate View'). Finally there are 25 pages of printable resources for use during the activities.
We hope your students produce some powerful poems! Enjoy.
Over 25 poems about Winter, Christmas and Winter weather gathered in a collection for EYFS and KS1.
The booklet could either be printed and used as a book or the poems used individually for performances.
This flexible lesson is inspired by the annual festive Trafalgar Square tree // Each year, the Poetry Society works with primary schools to create a new poem to wrap around the tree. This is an extract from the resource pack // The plan covers techniques such as reading aloud and writing poems, and themes such as sharing, celebration and personification // It can be used for teaching winter festivals, National Tree Week, Tree Dressing Day and Christmas // At a glance: Christmas, celebration, recitation, whole class activity // More resources are online at www.poetrysociety.org.uk/education
