Black History Month Assembly - October

(2)
This resource includes an assembly plan and 16 slide PowerPoint for Black History Month in October. It is suitable to use with KS2 or secondary aged children. The slideshow gives the opportunity to discuss why we might focus on black history for a month. It covers prehistory, ancient civilizations and 18th and 19th century Britain. There are 6 slides which outline key achievements of 6 different people of African or Caribbean descent, who have achieved great things in the past few centuries from Nelson Mandela to Mo Farah. (Please note no photos of the people are included owing to copyright restrictions). The plan gives details about how to use the slideshow. I like to lead assemblies that are interactive and relevant to the children’s lives, so the plan gives plenty of opportunities for children to discuss ideas, give feedback and reflect.

Black History: Apartheid In South Africa - Reading Comprehension Text

(1)
This Reading Comprehension / Informational Text is suitable for advanced to proficient ESL learners or native English speakers. The text explores the emergence and history of apartheid in South Africa. Translated from Afrikaans, apartheid means ‘apartness’ and it was an ideology supported by the National Party (NP) government introduced in South Africa in 1948. Apartheid laws attempted to stop all inter-marriage and social integration between black and white people and forced the different racial groups to live separately and “develop” separately in grossly unequal terms. After carefully reading the text, students are required to complete some comprehension exercises including comprehension questions, a definition match, a multiple choice exercise and a crossword. The text can also be used for vocabulary building purposes. An ideal activity for Black History month. (celebrated in February in the United States and Canada, and in October for the Netherlands & the United Kingdom) Total number of pages: 7 Answer key included

African Animals Colourful Semantics

(0)
Children can create non fiction sentences about some common African animals by cutting out the cards and laying them down in the correct order. Children can swap the cards in with another of the same colour to help them understand sentence structure and create repeated sentences. The word cards ‘have’, ‘can’ and ‘like’ have also been included to get children to think about what follows this. Initially, just give children ‘have’ and the yellow cards which would make sense after ‘have’ Once children become confident in creating, then reading aloud their sentences, they can move on to writing them down. Full stop cards have also been included.

All the lessons come with a suggestion for the music that could be used and they can be linked to create a narrative dance.
