Refugee Simulation Pack

(1)
This resource contains an asylum seeker/refugee simulation activity pack. It is an ideal resource for Refugee Week / Refugee Day in June. It includes an editable lesson plan, a simulation activity and a set of follow-up activities. The simulation, in PowerPoint form, contains 8 scenarios. Pupils are divided into groups and are required to make decisions/take actions. Some of the scenarios are accompanied by a timer with dramatic music playing to simulate the confusion in which refugees have to make quick decisions. Scenario 1 - War has broken out. Members of the group have to leave their homes. They are required to choose 6 items to take with them. Scenario 2 - A pick-up truck arrives to take the group to a boat on the coast. The driver speeds away as fast as he can. He hits a speed bump and one of the group’s bags falls off the back of the truck. Scenario 4 - The truck continues its journey towards the coast but runs out of fuel and the group has to walk. To make the journey easier everyone has to take the heaviest item out of their bag to make it lighter. Scenario 6 – The group reaches the coast. There is a small boat waiting. However, the boat can only take four people. Scenario 7 – The man with the boat wants payment. Members of the group must give any money they have to him. If they have no money they have to give him their most valuable item. Scenario 8 -The boat sets sail. The wind gets up and the waves become rough. Water from the waves gets into the boat. Your bag is drenched. Anything which could be affected by water is ruined. Review: "Wow, my year 10 History students loved this lesson. Each student was engaged and even students who normally have to be pushed to answer questions were eagerly filling out the review questions at the end. The added music to the PPT really added to the drama of the scenarios. This was an exciting and top-quality product." This play for primary schools looks at how we can both under- and over-eat and what this does for our health. Children will learn about undernutrition and overnutrition, what nutrients are and the impacts they have on their health, and the impact diet and exercise have on their bodies. The play lasts around 15 minutes in performance. The script has roles for everyone in the class and not only explores topics but develops transferable skills such as teamwork, creativity and leadership. It is great to perform for the whole school community. You might use it for assemblies, harvest festivals, and special food related events like World No Meat day. The play is written by Adam Hughes and produced by Theatre of Debate. It is part of The Crunch - an exciting year of free activities, experiences and discussions about our food, our health and our planet: please see thecrunch.wellcome.ac.uk/schools-and-colleges and use #thecrunch2016.

Forbidden is part of the 10 Stories to Make a Difference collection, published by Pop Up Projects to reflect the need for greater inclusivity and diversity in children’s books. Find out more at https://pop-up.org.uk/bookshop/ All our resources have been designed to improve the access to, confidence in and enjoyment of reading, creative writing, illustration and visual literacy. They can be used to support the national curriculum, and cover a wide range of subjects including PSHE, Science, History, Art and Design as well as Literacy and English. They also help teachers support pupils’ wellbeing and their learning about topics including disability, activism, multiculturalism, LGBTQIA+ community as well as women in the STEM [Science, Technology, Engineering, Mathematics] industry. The resources provide creative, fun activities and prompts for KS2 teachers creating lesson plans. All the materials can be adapted to suit the needs, interests and abilities of individual classes.
