We start with a retrieval practice starter. We then have a recap on the causes of the General Strike. the pupils are given some pictures, then if needed some worded prompts. We then, after a brief recap of events, look at the tactics used by both sides in the general strike. The pupils assess the effectiveness, on a visual scale, of these tactics and explain their reasons. We then look at the ending of the strike, and the consequences. The pupils complete a text analysis and look for political and economic reasons. We then briefly look at the impact of the strike on the Unions before finishing with an exam-style question on a source published in Punch satirising the TUC’s ineffectiveness to shift the government,

**What happened: **
In 1956 people of Hungary began to protest about their lack of political freedoms and problems created by fuel shortages and poor harvests. This led to riots in Budapest and the replacement of Rakosi with Imre Nagy.
Nagy announced a set of proposed reforms – authorised release of political prisoners, ended 1 party state.
1000 Russian tanks were sent and 4000 Hungarians killed fighting the Russians. Nagy executed.
Consequences:
• 200,000 Hungarian refugees fled into Austria.
• Russia stayed in control behind the Iron Curtain.
• People in the West were horrified.
• Became clear that Western Europe would not come to the aid of Eastern European countries.
• Khrushchev’s position became more secure in the Soviet Union.
• Example that Warsaw Pact members should do as they were told by Russia.

Included in this resource:
Student guidelines for completing the tasks meaning no teacher prep
A student answer key to complete as they work through the tasks
An informational text or reading comprehension passage
A true or false fact sheet & maze
A crossword puzzle

⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻⎻
In Task 1 students will read an informational text about the Titanic disaster and then find their way through a maze by answering true or false comprehension questions. If they answer the questions correctly they will reveal their first word.
In Task 2 students will use the same informational text to complete a crossword puzzle. Within the puzzle there are several hidden letters which will need to be unscrambled on the completion of the puzzle to reveal the second word.
In Task 3 students will have to cut out 27 timeline task cards about important historical events from the 1900s before putting them in order from the earliest date to the most recent. When they have finished their task they can glue them onto the answer key which will reveal their third word.
In Task 4 students will have to find the missing words in a wordsearch puzzle before finding a hidden word from the letters that are left over in the puzzle. This hidden word is their fourth and final word.
Students can then complete their student answer key with the four words they revealed before checking with the teacher to see if they have escaped successfully.

Who are EC Resources?
EC Resources are a group of teachers who work together to create easy to use, high quality and editable lessons and units of work. We have created lessons for The Bank of England, The Children’s Commissioner, MACS Charity, The British Legion, Tes, LikeToBe Careers, the Criminal Cases Review Commission (UK Gov) and have also completed PSHE and Citizenship commissions for schools across the UK.
These ‘at a glance’ revision notes were specially written to give Edexcel A Level History students a comprehensive overview of the key knowledge from the specification for **Paper 1 Option 1F In search of the American Dream USA c1917–96: **
1 The changing political environment, 1917–80
2 The quest for civil rights, 1917–80
3 Society and culture in change, 1917–80
4 The changing quality of life, 1917–80
Historical Interpretations: What impact did the Reagan presidency (1981–89) have on the USA in the years 1981–96? (Specific historians and their viewpoints are detailed here)
They are especially useful for students whose note-taking in lesson isn’t as good as others, or whose organisational skills mean they are missing notes/handouts on certain topics/areas. These notes will certainly help reduce the time it takes them to catch up with their peers, and also students like to use these as a checklist of topics to go into in further detail.
Hopefully these notes help to save your students (and you!) some time in the hectic run up to exams. Thanks for taking a look :)

Activities I used for a study on The Titanic with Year 6. 1 week was not enough! The kids loved it and we ended up creating a 3D ship which included facts, figures, illustrations and diagrams which the children created themselves - can’t wait to do it again next year!
A smart worksheet and timeline that requires students to separate the causes of WW2 into long and short term factors.
Then, classify events into broader headings of : The Treaty of Versailles, Hitler’s foreign policy, the failure of the League, Appeasement and the Nazi-Soviet Pact.
