This unit of work is designed to help build the key skills required for AQA’s Step Up to English Gold Award Component 2 Creative Reading and Writing: SPORT. It gives students practice in tackling the types of question in the assessment and can be taught across a half-term or adapted for a shorter course. It is ideal for Year 10 or Year 11 students who are entered for this award.
This half-termly unit is designed to prepare students for their AQA Step Up to English Gold Award MUSIC unit. It is a 50+ slide PPT with lots of engaging activities to ensure they develop the skills to complete the assessment tasks for speaking and listening (group work and individual presentation), reading and writing. All resources are included. I have prepared this PPT for my own Year 10 Step Up group. Thanks for looking.
This unit is based around Shakespeare’s ‘The Tempest’. I have taught it to both Year 7 and 8 though it could easily be adapted for a Year 9 class. It is designed to fit into a half-term but, depending on how many lessons you have, could be taught over a whole term. There is a 70+ slide PPT with a range of creative and enjoyable activities including drama-style tasks suitable for use in the English classroom such as a ‘guided tour’ of the island. There is also a homework project which runs throughout the unit and a Reading assessment essay built in. The Wordsworth Classics text is very cheap to buy and the 2010 film with Helen Mirren can be used alongside this unit as can the Animated Tales version. Thanks for looking.
This scheme of work is designed to develop some of the skills required for the Paper 2 non-fiction English Language exam, including both Reading and Writing skills as well as the creative writing section of Paper 1. It takes a number of key extracts from Joe Simpson’s ‘Touching the Void’ as the basis for language study and as models for good descriptive writing. I have used it with my current Year 10 group who have enjoyed and engaged with it. All resources including extracts and planning frames for the three key pieces of writing are included as word documents. This was planned for the AQA paper however it is suitable for other GCSE exam boards such as Edexcel which have similar style exam papers.
This PPT is designed as a training package for colleagues who are delivering training to teaching staff on how to make effective use of their teaching assistants. It would be useful for trainees as well as staff in schools who wish to consider how to deploy TAs more effectively within the classroom. The unit is underpinned by recent research and allows for interaction and discussion as well as the sharing of existing good practice. It could easily form one or two training sessions with teaching colleagues and includes some ‘gap’ tasks to move colleagues forward.
This unit is designed to prepare students for the Step Up Gold/Silver assessment. It is based around two Roald Dahl short stories ‘The Hitchhiker’ and ‘The Landlady’ and includes opportunities for developing reading and creative writing skills. It is ideal preparation for a Component 2 assessment.

It guides students through the skills required for the speaking and listening assessment as well as preparing them for the reading and writing assessments with lots of opportunities for discussion and research. The assessments themselves and mark schemes are available on the eAQA site. Thanks for looking.
This half-termly unit is designed for students working towards their AQA Step Up to English (Gold and Silver) entry level assessments. It is based on the theme of travel and involves students in analysing travel leaflets as a prelude to creating their own. They also complete a speaking and listening tasks including group work and an individual presentation in-line with the style of the AQA Step Up to English assessments. I used this scheme of work in term 1 with my Year 10 class. Resources are included.
This scheme of work is intended to be a creative and enjoyable way to explore the novel and is suitable for an able Year 7 or a Year 8 class. I taught it over the course of a term to my Year 7 but it could be condensed into a half-term. It includes preparation for Reading and Writing assessment pieces, (a piece of descriptive writing and a reading response) as well as lots of speaking and listening activities. There are also a number of engaging research/homework activities to which this novel lends itself and some activities which can be done as drama/role-play activities but which don’t require moving desks or classrooms! All resources to accompany the scheme are included. I hope your class enjoy the novel. Thanks for looking.
This unit is designed to help prepare students for their Gold/ Silver assessments for the AQA Step Up to English Entry Level certificate - this unit is built around the Component 1 Volunteering unit. It is designed to last approximately 4-5 weeks and takes students through some of the key skills required for each section of the assessment, beginning with Speaking assessment and moving on to the Reading and Writing assessments. I have used this with my Year 10 and Year 11 Step Up classes and it has helped lead to very successful assessment outcomes. All resources for the unit are attached. Thanks for looking.
This is a 36 PPT slide unit which helps to develop key skills including vivid verbs, amazing adjectives and adventurous adverbs in an enjoyable and interactive way. It could be taught as a weekly or fortnightly skills lesson to a Year 7 or Year 8 group and culminates in a piece of descriptive writing. I have used it this term with my lower ability Year 7 group to good effect. All resources are included in word documents. Thanks for looking.
