Beowulf themed differentiated worksheets containing a variety of fronted adverbial activities, focusing on the first part of the story. The fronted adverbial worksheets are differentiated three ways. They contain a variety of fronted adverbial activities to develop pupils’ knowledge of fronted adverbials and improve their skills in using fronted adverbials in their writing. Pupils are asked to identify different types of fronted adverbials, re-write sentences to include fronted adverbials and commas, and write their own sentences with fronted adverbials including correct punctuation. The worksheet focuses on the first part of Michael Morpurgo’s re-telling of the epic Anglo-Saxon tale, Beowulf. Each worksheet comes with an answer sheet. Teacher notes are also provided. It is based on a part of the story containing no direct speech. Differentiated feature find sheets with answers and word bank are also included. A character sort activity involving the main characters in the book The Butterfly Lion by Michael Morpurgo. Pupils must sort the cards to match the name of the character, a brief description, a picture of the character and a quote about the character from the text. The activity can be made less challenging by removing one of the categories, such as the quotations, from the sort. The number of characters can also be altered to suit the needs of the pupils. The activity can be carried out in small groups, pairs or individually. This resource is a useful reminder to pupils about the names and roles of the characters in the story to help pupils to understand the novel as they read.
