I got this idea from Tristan Jones @tris206 who had similar thing which I liked on TES, so I produced my own. I have purposely used a quite obscure joke so that it can't be guessed! The transformations involved are reflection, rotation and translation. For those who downloaded it very quickly, there's a second one!

Find out who stole the satsuma from my stocking by solving all the clues (it will always be person 14 by the way). I have left the suspect sheet blank so that you can enter the names you wish; I've used classes, colleagues, celebrities when I've done similar things. Each clue eliminates half of the remaining suspects and should take around an hour depending whether you let them use a calculator or not.

This idea is from Craig Barton and is an excellent one (check them out his at website); essentially it is four questions based on the same information. There are four here which use perimeter, area, Pythagoras, equations of lines, coordinates, vectors, equations of circles, expanding brackets, solving equations as well as other topics. This really should create discussion and a deeper understanding of the topics covered on top of ensuring that students actually read the question. I hope these are worthy! I will be using these as starters or plenaries.

I have concentrated on the algebra rather than linking to graphs of functions as I’m not sure at GCSE that the graphs are overly helpful for solving function notation problems; I will eventually get on to transforming functions which will tackle this (size could be an issue in the format though). This goes from simple function machines, through substitution, rearranging formulae and links them to functions questions. This started off as a request from a former colleague who bemoaned the lack of function notation resources, which is a fair point at present, I think.

Six “Crack The Safe” activities where there are more possible answers than questions thus avoiding students guessing or answering by process of elimination. There is a symmetry (both reflective and rotational) activity, plus one each on reflection, rotation, translation and enlargement before a final sheet on mixed transformations (not including enlargement however as this proved problematic in the format!).

Clive has two transformation homeworks (the second is more challenging than the first), but as usual he has made mistakes on each of the four questions. The students need to correct Clive's mistakes and explain what he has done wrong. This is designed to create discussion amongst students and with their teacher. The second involves negative and fractional scale factors of enlargements.

Three “Crack The Safe” activities on graphs (one on calculating gradient, one on y=mx+c, one on finding coordinates given an equation, one on transforming functions: two quadratics and a trigonometric function). These contain six questions but ten possible answers meaning that students can self-check their answers (are they in the list of possible answers?) whilst the teacher can help those who require it. I use these as starters and plenaries but that is obviously up to you.

This not only lists all the topics on the IGCSE maths syllabus but also gives an example of what they all are so you don’t get the continual question “what does this topic mean?”. I put a RAG analysis against each too so that students can focus revision to where it’s required. A few topics added including expanding 3 brackets, transforming functions, an extra indices example, shading regions (I originally left this off by mistake) and adding/subtracting algebraic fractions. I have just added some more examples of transformations and constructions plus summing arithmetic sequences and recurring decimals. Also includes Sparx activity codes (you can delete if you don’t want those). There are now answers (which I have done quite quickly so hopefully not too many errors!).

I’ve called this an “Advent” calendar as I couldn’t think of a better name, but I have little intention of using it in the run up to Christmas only. There are 24 questions which you can choose to display; students have a go and can then check their solutions with the model answer slide. Topics include bearings, averages, expanding and simplifying brackets, angle problems, transformations, proportion, simultaneous equations, similar shapes, indices, surds, circle theorems, algebraic fractions amongst other topics. Questions are from Edexcel past papers.
