Spot The Mistakes - Fractions

(33)
This is a twist on revision notes. I have written some notes and given examples but there are mistakes that the students have to correct. They must therefore read the notes very carefully and a partner must check their work. The idea is derived from an idea born from a discussion on Twitter (if you're not on Twitter, seriously think about it). I have split the notes up into three but I have included the whole thing so that you can chop them up your own way, or change stuff if you want. It&'s a bit of an experiment and we&';ll see how it goes!

Spot The Mistakes - Expressions and Equations

(8)
This is a revision aid where students must read the 'notes' carefully and find the deliberate errors (and possibly undeliberate ones!). I have split (with some overlap) it up into three parts going from 'what is an expression/identity/equation?', through simplifying, expanding brackets, factorising into a bracket, solving equations, multiplying out 2 brackets, factorising quadratics and solving quadratics (factorising, completing the square and the formula). The aim is to get them active in their revision!

Clumsy Clive On Pythagoras and Trigonometry

(10)
Clive has two homeworks to tackle but is making mistakes once again. The first homework involves right-angled triangles, the second a question in 3D and non-right-angled triangles. Spot the mistakes, correct them and then explain what Clive needs to do in the future.

Clumsy Clive On Compound Measures

(8)
Clive is having a go at some homework regarding speed, density and population density. As usual with these it is a case of spotting Clive's mistakes, correcting then explaining what he has done wrong. They are designed to create discussion points in class.

Clumsy Clive On Proportion

(6)
Clive is making silly mistakes again and it is down to your class to spot, correct and explain where he's gone wrong. This is designed to create discussion between students and teacher. This could be used as a plenary or a revision task.

Erica's Errors On Trigonometric Ratios

(5)
Erica has a homework involving the sine and cosine rules as well as trigonometric functions. She thinks she's made mistakes; your students' task is to help Erica spot and correct the mistakes, explaining what she has mixed up. Designed to cover the new A level course and encourage discussion.

Erica's Errors On Algebraic Methods

(5)
Erica is struggling with algebraic division, the factor theorem and proof. She needs your help to correct her mistakes before explaining what she's done incorrectly. This is designed to create discussion and embrace the new curriculum that likes getting students to spot mistakes.

Clumsy Clive's Quadratics Tests 1 & 2

(1)
Clive is having a go at quadratics questions now; these involve expanding two brackets, plotting graphs, factorising and solving on test 1 before moving on to more solving, using the roots, completing the square and using the quadratic formula. Clive is prone to making mistakes so your class has to spot these and explain what his mistakes are so that he learns from them.

Clumsy Clive's Algebra Tests 1 & 2

(0)
Clive is having a go at some revision tests on some basic algebra, including simple algebraic fractions, like terms, expanding brackets, solving linear equations (including with variables on both sides), expanding two brackets and substitution. He has made a mistake on each question; your class needs to spot the error, correct it and then explain what it is. These are designed to encourage discussion in class and develop deeper understanding using common errors.

Clumsy Clive's Surds and Indices Tests

(0)
Clive is tackling two tests on surds and indices; the second is more challenging than the first. As usual he is making mistakes and needs your students’ help to explain what he has done wrong and show him how he should have completed the questions correctly. These activities are designed to create discussion and develop understanding and model the new style “spot the error” questions that now appear in many exams.

Casey is working through the AQA Further Maths Level 2 Certificate and has reached the Calculus chapter; however, Casey requires the help of your class. Spot the mistakes, correct them and explain where Casey has gone wrong. These work well for discussions in class.
