This lesson plan looks at one way class journals might be set up in order to introduce students to the idea and to get them working with journals The kind of class journal described here is designed to get the students writing freely in a range of different ways. The emphasis is on fluency, as opposed to any kind of genre writing, and could be compared to the kind of oral fluency activities done with students.

Length (four days). The main aim here is to move children on from directly comparing lengths (laying one scarf against another) to measuring lengths using a repeated unit. Children measure distances in hand spans and foot lengths, realising that this will give different results if different hands/feet are used, therefore understanding the need for a uniform measure and then a standard measure. Children estimate, measure and order lengths using cubes, rulers and beads (all uniform non-standard measures), and compare lengths with strings of a given number of beads. The metre stick is introduced and used as a unit to measure with. Children look for objects longer and shorter than one metre. A PowerPoint that focuses on informing children about Holocaust Memorial Day. ‘Home Again (Refugee Song)’ was written in response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and to the news reports about millions of people escaping to other countries. The song is sung by a mother to her child. In just a few words, ‘Home Again’ asks the question – how can you return home when your home either does not exist anymore or is just a temporary stay in a new country? The music is soothing. The gently pulsing rhythm is calming and meditative. My hope is that you will find this song a useful way to raise the topic of population displacement with children. If you work with refugee children, I hope it will help them understand that, whatever they might have been through, there is always a possibility to build a new home in a new place. The song has three main chords and can easily be transcribed to suit your children’s voices.

One-page stories with gaps. Teachers asks pupils for 'an adjective' 'a part of the body' etc and then read out the hilarious story. A great way to stretch your pupils' vocabulary, improve their awareness of parts of speech and to encourage story writing. Stories range from primary to teenage and are also suitable for EFL and ESL classes. You can get the students to fill in the story themselves - which the younger learners enjoy.
