Go for gold with our new Summer Sports Poetry Pack! This is a five-lesson English unit of poetry planning for Years 3 and 4, based on creating shape poetry themed on the summer olympic games. In this unit, pupils will research different olympic sports and work on developing vocabulary to describe the different movements involved. Pupils will investigate shape poetry and begin to understand the relationship between the language used in the poem and the shape of the words on the page. There is also a grammar focus on adding suffixes to form comparative adjectives. At the end of the unit the pupils will work towards a visual performance of a poem that is created in the shape of the olympic rings. The objectives of the unit for pupils are: • To investigate shape poetry • To retrieve information from non-fiction • To apply grammar rules for adding suffixes • To prepare a group poetry performance • To create a shape poem The PDF file contains 5 full literacy lesson plans and all accompanying pupil resources. This unit would work really well with topics about summer, sports, olympics, going for gold or healthy bodies. A game board to practise nouns and simple sentences. 2 versions included for differentiation purposes. Answer key included (so pupils work independently). Great to introduce sports in a novel way- give them the board game and a dictionary and it is a really fun way to challenge them to learn sports nouns. Use it as follow up once you have introduced the vocabulary as it is an excellent way of practising speaking and listening skills. Other important features: pupil independence, pupil collaboration, challenge and competition. I always have 100% engagement when I give them a board game (I have others available). A rewarding way to differentiate- what better incentive to complete the task than to know you can play a game at the end! No need to cut anything- just print. A4 is fine, A3 is great. Add dice and counters. (I get pupils to use spare coins for counters and lots of them have dice roll app on their phones these days if you are struggling for these). Any feedback is always gratefully received and if you have any requests for future board games please send me a message.

Print off the board and then print the 4 sheets of questions on the correct coloured card. Sport in French - dice game. Pupils work in pairs and each write down the numbers 1-6. They take turns to throw the dice, tick off that number and say the French from the corresponding picture. The winner is the first to tick off all six numbers. (If you keep throwing the same number you will lose.)
Print on cardstock and laminate to last for years to come. Make 1 game board for every 2-3 students. You will need 2 dice for each game board. You also need bingo chips to mark squares. Or, if laminated, students can use a dry erase marker to initial a square. Students take turns rolling the dice to determine which square. Students must correctly identify the picture in the square to win it. Student with most squares at the end of time wins the game OR student who gets 6 in a row (“bingo”) wins.
This is a game to practice sports and exercise vocabulary. Students move around the board and say a sport of form of exercise that matches the photo on the space. If students give the correct answer they can remain on their spot until their next turn. If students give the incorrect answer they must go back to their previous spot and wait until their next turn to try again. The student that reaches the "finish" square first or is the farthest in the game when their time is up Wins! Class divides into teams. Take turns rolling the die & moving along the board. There are 3 move ahead shortcuts (green arrows) and 3 go backwards spaces (red arrows). The game may be played on many levels - ID the sport, like/dislike, adjectives (interesting, fun, etc), tell who does this sport, etc. Pictures only, so may be used with any language.
Print on cardstock and laminate to last for years to come. Make 1 board for every 2-4 students. You will need 1 die per game and 1 token for each player. All tokens start off of the board. Students take turns rolling the die to advance. If the student lands on a green ladder, he/she goes to the top of the ladder. If the student lands on a red slide, he/she goes to the bottom of the slide. When landing on a number, the student must identify the sport in the target language. If wrong, student goes back to original square and loses his/her turn.
