Ideas for NPD 2020

A bright and creative PowerPoint exploring this year’s National Poetry Day theme of ‘Change’. This lesson plan includes individual tasks and group / pair tasks. The lesson allows for exploration of a poem about change, analysing language and structure, as well as the opportunity for students to create their own poem in response to the theme of ‘Change’. This lesson will be perfect for KS3.

A ready to use unit based on this year’s theme: The Environment. This unit contains activities linked to three poems which feature on the NPD official website: Daisy Chain, Litter is Rubbish and Being True to Yourself. Pupils will learn about some poetic techniques and be given chances to apply this learning to little bursts of poetry before embarking on their final piece of poetry for this year’s event.

A structured comprehension on 'The Sea' by James Reeve and a word mat to prompt discussion of any poem. Suitable for upper KS2 and KS3. For differentiation, you can select which questions children complete, or for group discussion you can use the poetry word mat. The session started by discussing the poem and finding examples of poetic techniques, such as rhyme, alliteration, onomatopoeia, assonance and sibilant sounds. We discussed the change in the three verses. For extension, pupils could either write a river metaphor (see river metaphor poem ), or alternatively find points of comparison between the river and a different things (see worksheet).

National Poetry Day, which this year is on 28th September, is an annual celebration of poetry and all things poetical. It’s about everybody sharing poetry, reading poetry, writing poetry, and enjoying poetry! For schools this can be a chance to make more of something already enjoyed throughout the school or it can be a launch pad for new experience and enjoyment. It outlines several lesson activities you can try in your classroom to enhance teaching and learning and enjoyment of poetry. In this resource students follow through the instructions that you read out to create their own poem. It would make a great activity for National Poetry Day, or as an introductory lesson to poetry. It’s lots of fun to do and pupils tend to enjoy it! It is best suited to a KS3 class and works for all abilities, but could be used for any class really (I have used it with KS5 who loved it!) N.B. An easy competition to run this National Poetry Day 2021. Students read the cento, focusing on this year’s theme of choice and then guess how many poems it is made from - the answer is 12!

This is made as a PowerPoint to celebrate National Poetry Day but could also be used for tutor time literacy, intervention work or as a fun poetry club activity.
